Comparing Different Bottle Closures

An unusual tasting was recently held in Yountville (Napa Valley) at the annual Master of Wine seminar for enrolled students. The tasting was also attended by about a dozen Masters of Wine.

Each taster received four glasses filled from four different bottles of the same wine - a 2004 Sauvignon Blanc from Washington State. The winery had used different closures on the four bottles. The participants were asked two questions.

  • Which closure do you think closed each wine?

  • Which wine do you prefer?

The first wine showed very oxidized characteristics, and most thought it was from the plastic cork, which was correct.

The second wine showed some oxidized character, some evolution, and was thought to be cork by many people. In fact it had been closed with an experimental Supreme cork called X2 - still a plastic cork but with a bit of flexibility to the plastic.

The third glass was fresh and the most aromatic. It had been closed with a new screw cap using a foam liner instead of the "first generation" aluminum liner.

The last glass was not oxidized, but it showed reduction and a leaner mouth feel with a shorter finish. A straight screw cap using the original aluminum liner had been used for this bottle.

The preferred wine was overwhelmingly from the third bottle.

Unfortunately no cork closure was shown for comparison, but the conclusion of this admittedly limited experiment was that the newest, foam-lined screw caps are superior to the original screw caps and much superior to plastic corks.
